School Programs

PSO BRAVO!’s three school programs, coordinated by the PSO’s dedicated education staff, engage students in ways designed specifically for each school age group. To learn more about how your school can become a part of PSO BRAVO!, please contact the PSO office by phone at (609) 497-0020 or by email at info@princetonsymphony.org.

Meet the Orchestra! (Elementary School)

Education becomes entertainment in the hands of the PSO musicians who stage Meet the Orchestra! teaching performances at more than 30 public, private, and special-needs elementary schools. Over the course of the school year, a series of four lively, interactive presentations introduces students to the instrument families: strings, woodwinds, brass, and percussion.

Each spring, as a capstone to the program, students take a field trip to Richardson Auditorium to see all of the instruments come together on stage in an exciting orchestra concert performed just for them. This year, students and teachers from our partner schools were treated to a PSO BRAVO! concert on May 3, 2013, featuring The Sorcerer’s Apprentice by Paul Dukas and The Firebird Suite by Igor Stravinsky.  Study materials prepared for teachers and their students are still available for viewing  here!

We love having parents stop by for our Meet the Orchestra! performances in schools. View our schedule to see when we will be at your child’s school, and simply let us know which performance you would like to attend; call the PSO office at (609) 497-0020 or email Carol Burden, education coordinator, at cburden@princetonsymphony.org.

Listen Up! (Middle School)

Middle school students can let their imaginations and artistic creativity run free with Listen Up!, a program that explores the connections between music and visual art. Participating students attend a Classical Series concert as a group and then individually capture their reactions to one piece of music by creating original artwork. Their beautiful art is displayed at Richardson Auditorium at a later PSO concert.

The 2012-2013 Listen Up! project focused on Rimsky-Korsakov’s Scheherazade, which the PSO performed as part of the Fertile Crescent project, a Rutgers University showcase of exhibitions, lectures, performances, film screenings, and events focused on women from the Middle East.

Master It! (High School and College)

Advanced high school and college instrumentalists receive the music lesson of a lifetime through Master It!, an annual masterclass given by one of the world-class soloists from the PSO’s Classical Series season. Students selected for this prestigious program take part in a public performance, and receive technical and interpretive guidance from a musician at the top of the classical music world. Masterclasses are open to the public for observation. On Saturday, May 4, 2013, Cho-Liang Lin, soloist on the concert Silk Road Dances, will lead a violin masterclass.
