China’s Glory

Sunday, October 7, 2012
4 pm; Pre-concert talk 3 pm
Richardson Auditorium

At the season’s opening concert, the PSO warmly welcomes members of China’s Hangzhou Federation of Literary and Art Circles, in residence for the U.S. premiere of Zhou Tian’s The Grand Canal, which was commissioned by the Federation in celebration of the magnificent waterway that has shaped Chinese history. Stravinksy’s Song of the Nightingale, based on a fairytale set in ancient China, takes a more fanciful view of the culture. Between these two Chinese tributes is Rachmaninoff’s spirited Piano Concerto No. 1, played by charismatic pianist Di Wu.
