This concert is a preview to the world premiere dramatization of Pushkin’s Eugene Onegin. The program opens with Prokofiev’s Suite to Eugene Onegin, composed for a staging of the classic novel-in-verse. The dramatic adaptation was banned by the Soviet government in 1936, and will be given its first-ever performance on February 9 (see more information below). Shostakovich also faced pressures from the Stalinist government. His Symphony No. 5 was written under the threat of being branded an enemy of the people, but the work’s elements of classicism ultimately had the power to earn him both political and public favor. Headlining the concert is “classical rock star” Joshua Roman, who will perform Tchaikovsky’s Variations on a Rococo Theme, a tribute to the simple elegance of Mozart’s musical style.

Please also join the PSO on February 9 for a world premiere of the recently recovered theatrical adaptation of Pushkin’s Eugene Onegin. The never-before-performed text will be united with Prokofiev’s score of incidental music for the first time, in a joint production with Princeton University’s music, dance, and Slavic studies departments.
