b'African American Traditionalarr. Nina SimoneSinnerman Sinner Man, a traditional African-American spiritual, has been performed and recorded in many forms. The earliest known commercial recording is from 1956, when Les Baxter recorded the song for Capitol Records with his Les Baxter Orchestra. Legendary singer Nina Simone made the song her own, changing the title to Sinnerman and extending the length to ten minutes. The song was released on Simones 1965 album Pastel Blues and she performed it frequently in her live concerts, resulting in its becoming one of her most well-known songs. On a 2017 Buskaid tour to Columbia, South America, which included a collaboration with El Colegio del Cuerpo, a community contemporary dance project, vocalist Mathapelo Matabane was asked to sing a number of Nina Simone songs as part of a tribute to the singer. She has been performing songs popularized by Ms. Simone ever since.Soweto String QuartetMbayi Mbayi Reggie Msomis Hollywood Jazz BandMidnight Ska MafikizoloKwela KwelaAll Buskaids township music - Kwela, Gospel, Jazz and Afro-pop - has been arranged and choreographed by Buskaid musicians. Since none of these arrangements has ever been written down, the players have to commit all the music to aural memory. New recruits to the Ensemble are helped by senior Ensemble members to learn the songs through aural and visual transmission, a process reminiscent of traditional folk music. A typical Kwela session to learn a new song can be an extremely noisy and even argumentative occasion! buskaid.org.za/ 19'
